Yahoo Answers For Radial Aircraft Engine
Question Why not more use of the radial aircraft engine anymore?
Just mostly you see them on the WWII warbirds. Also will you comment on the twin boom design like the P-38 Lightning, and P-61? I just like the style. @ Timothy, thanks for the correction and clarification @JetDoc, I agree. My old boss had a T-28 Trojan

Best Answer Radials eventually grew too complex to be further developed in the 1950s. The large 28 cylinder R-4360s and the Turbo-compound R-3350s represented the epitome of what a piston engine was capable of.... and both had dubious reliability. The peak of power and reliability was reached with the R-2800. For greater power with better reliability, it was the turboprop that replaced the radial. First with the military in the 1950s with larger engines like the T-34 and T-56. The smaller radials still had their place among civil operators and smaller aircraft, but the invention of the small PT-6, TPE-331, and Allison 250 turboprops meant that there were now engines that could replace anything between the largest opposed piston engines (<400HP like the IO-720, GTSIO-520, and TIO-541) to as large of radial engine that was ever made. Turboprops used more fuel and were more expensive, but were lighter and required less maintenance. As for the twin boom designs.... they were made with various different purposes. In the case of the P-38 and P-61, they allowed for the installation of the large amount of ducting required for turbochargers. The poor performance of the P-40 and P-39 were because they deleted or didn't install the turbochargers because there wasn't enough room... and a supercharger loses power with altitude where a turbocharger will keep the same power until its critical altitude. The P-47 also had a turbocharger, but required a massive fuselage to contain it. Other twin boom designs were done for various reasons. Two install two engines on the centerline (Cessna 337). To afford better visibility for rear observers/gunners (Focke Wulf 189 Uhu), to allow a rear mounted engine for massive forward firepower (SAAB 21), to shorten the jet exhaust of a single engine fighter (DeHavilland Vampire), and to allow easy loading of cargo (C-82 Packet/C-119 Boxcar).
Question In WW2 why did the Americans favour radial engines for aircraft and British in line engines.?
Oh and dont forget planes like,B17,B24,and the other twins like Mitchels,B29.even the mighty B36 all had radials.

Best Answer US navy aircraft used radial engines for a few reasons; 1: they are tough. many times radial engined aircraft had a few cylinders shot away and the engines would still run. 2: radial engines made a lot of power, were air cooled, and didnt have all the attendant plumbing that inline engines have which makes for better reliability. 3: you can store a lot more radial engines on an aircraft carrier than you can inline engines, and you can replace them more easily, and thus more quickly, than an inline engine. US army air corps aircraft used a mix of engine types depending on what the manufacturers original intent was for the aircrafts primary mission. for instance the P51 was developed as an air superiority fighter, and thus needed the streamlining that an inline engine affords, where as the P47 was not only designed for air superiority, but for ground attack also, thus eliminating the liquid cooling system was a plus. you can take down a P51 by taking out the radiator. the various bombers that the army air corps used had radial engines because they made a lot of power, and were lighter than an equivalent inline engine, and thus that weight difference would allow for larger bomb loads. the british used inline engines because they tended to design aircraft not only as fighting machines, but as works of art as well. they also preferred the lower drag that the inline engines allowed.
